Cole John Mayes is in his 7th year as president of the Mercer County Fair. 153rd Mercer fair expected to be best HARRODSBURG Mercer County Fair President John Mayes is preoccupied with his occupation. Being responsible for putting together such an event as the Mercer County Fair is a task requiring personal absorption and dedication. "There's so much to do out here," Mayes said as he surveyed the fairground's center ring which will be the site of the fair's horse show.

Painting. mowing, and a general scrub-down of the area were among the activities a week ago as Mayes and his associates readied the premises for the the fair, scheduled for the week of July 26 through Aug. 1. Preparation for the Mercer County Fair has been underway since early April, he said. During that time, all the buildings have received fresh coats of paint, and the fair employees innumerable hours of work in the hot summer sun.

"There's not enough hours in the day to do all the work there is to It takes everybody's work and everybody's effort to get this thing together," he said. Mayes has been with the Mercer County Fair for almost 14 of its 153 years. He has been fair president for the past seven years. During its existance, he said, the fair has never been closed: not for war, not for disaster, not for the depression. He and the other eight members of the fair board compose the team which organize the events.

"We have a modern show." he said, "but we try and the old Arrangement of activities at this year's fair will be essentially the same as in previous years with only a few changes, he said. The primary changes are in the times the beauty show and the Little Miss contest will be held. The beauty show, he said, will be held Monday at 7 p.m., and the Little Miss contest slated for Thursday at 7 p.m. Another change anticipated by the fair board will be that the organ for the horse show will located in the center ring, which was ordinarily the spot for the show's emcee. The emcee will be moved to the center section of the arena.

A native of Casey County, survivors include four sons, James Garnett of St. Paul, Ronnie Eugene of Peoria, Larry Dale of Nicholasville, and Mark Sherrod Roberts of Hendersonville, three daughters, Geraldine Davidson of Lexington, Oneida Ferrell and Tamyra Mullin, both of Junction City; 13 grandchildren; two brothers, Herschel and Walter "Perk" Roberts, both of Hustonville; seven sisters, Myrtle Roberts and Beatrice Pemberton, both of Hustonville, Marie Stroup of Rockport, Lena Stroup of Centerville, Frances Steilberg of Louisville, Jane Martin of Harrodsburg and Letha Rousey of Danville.

Services will be conducted at p.m. Thursday at W.L. Pruitt Funeral Home in Moreland. The Rev. Jerry Browning will officiate and burial will be in Hustonville Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. today. Shafter Sizemore STANFORD Shafter Sizemore, 81, of Waynesburg Route 1, died Tuesday at Ephraim McDowell Memorial Hospital, Danville, after a long illness. A native of Bell County, he was a retired farmer. He is survived by his wife; Stella Flannery Sizemore.

Wethington CLEMENTSVILLE William Clement Wethington, 84, of the Clementsville community of Casey County, died at 7 a.m, Tuesday at Taylor County Hospital in Camp bellsville. A member of St. Bernard Catholic Church, he was a retired supervisor for Chrysler Corporation in Detroit, he was the son of the late Noah and Tommie Helm Wethington. He was the widower of Pearl Dukett and Adelle Summers. Survivors include two sons, Jimmy of North Carolina and William C.

of Houston, Texas; four sisters, Hester Wethington, Tommie Haggie, Teresa Mae Chaney and Mallie Montgomery, all of Liberty, and 10 grandchildren. Services. will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Bernard Catholic Church here.

Funerals Alonzo "Puddin" Beasley HARRODSBURG Services for Alonzo Berryman "Puddin" Beasley, 52, of the Duncan community of Mercer County, who died at 7:34 p.m. Monday of a gunshot wound to the neck, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home. The Revs. Obie Clark and David Cornish will officiate and burial will be in the Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery.

Beasley was reportedly shot during an argument in front of Drury's Grocery in Duncan. Robert Holland, 45, of Bohon, was arrested and has pleaded not guilty to murder in connection with the shooting. Beasley was husband of Opal Brummett Beasley. He was born July 4, 1929, in Washington County, to Gertrude Houchins Beasley of Duncan and the late Wilcher Beasley. He was a farmer and member of Bethel Baptist Church.

He was also a former employee of the Harrodsburg landfill. In addition to his wife, survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Gary Gilbert and Mrs. Ricky Stratton, both of Lawrenceburg, and Mrs. Billy Hatfield of Mercer County; three sons, William Berryman of Sunman, Tony Keith of Versailles and Steve Mark Beasley of Lawrenceburg; 12 grandchilren; a sister, Mrs.

Loren Anderson; two brothers, James of Batesville, and William Marshall Beasley of Harrodsburg, and several nieces and nephews. Friends may call at the funeral home after 4 p.m. today. Derothy J. Wilcher Services for Dorothy Juanita Wilcher, 52, formerly of Danville and a resident of Cincinnati, Ohio, were conducted at 1 p.m.
