Rated 2/5 Stars • Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/06/24 Full Review Wayne K While many people nowadays rail against remakes as a lazy cash grab with little to no artistic merit, many seem to forget that the mid-noughties were a particularly egregious time for this phenomenon, with a seemingly never-ending string of classic franchise getting an unnecessary reboot. And right on cue, we have The Fog, a remake of the 1980 John Carpenter film that, like all these pointless redoings, nobody was asking for, but we got anyway. The film is around 1 hour and 40 minutes, and I was bored to tears within the first half hour, so the rest was more of an endurance test than a viewing experience. The Fog is far from my favourite Carpenter film, but it still has his trademark eerie score, tense direction and escalating sense of foreboding. But because director Rupert Wainwright, who, as a sidenote, hasn't directed a film since, doesn't trust his audience to keep paying attention if something doesn't jump out of the screen every 5 minutes, the film is punctuated by musical stingers and irritating jumps scares. All the usual suspects of course: Doors banging, people popping out of nowhere in the dark, sudden screeches, explosions, light suddenly turning off etc. This wouldn't be so bad if the story was compelling and the characters were interesting, but neither of these things are true. It's a lifeless film, directed without an ounce of energy and subsequently dragging on for what feels like 3 hours. To top it all off, it ends on an anticlimax. Whether or not the 1980 version existed, there would still be no reason to watch this whatsoever. Save your time and do literally anything else, even if its housework.
